If you have some down-time on your hands, why not get your hands dirty––by working in your garden, of course. If your garden is thriving, the insects fluttering, and the plants budding, why not spend a little time decorating your favorite place?
It’s quite easy to beautify your garden with just some decorative garden stones, garden soil, and your imagination. And, it won’t break the bank either. Spruce up your landscaping ideas and your garden’s design with a few fun at-home projects. Here are some of our favorites this season:
Smaller Project Ideas
1. Colorful Pathways
Create your very own decorative garden stepping stones by making a cement mold – either of just a shape or the outline of an animal, like a butterfly – and decorating it with colorful decorative stones. Collect flat pebbles or stones and paint them as desired. Place the dried, painted pebbles in the wet cement of the stepping stones, just as you would if making a mosaic.
2. Painted Rocks
Get the kids involved here! They’ll love it and there are many things you can do with painted rocks. Our favorites are: labeling your veggies, herbs, and plants. Or how about outdoor games like Tic Tac Toe or painted bugs for decoration within your flower beds? We love the idea of painted cacti pebbles potted into a beautiful pot – this will make a great décor piece for your outdoor entertaining area.
3. Mosaic Features
Not all stepping stones have to lead somewhere. Why not create mosaic mandala circles and place them randomly within your garden? Again, you can do this by creating a cement mold and placing the mosaic tiles on top. Or mosaic a pattern or design onto a low wall running along a flowerbed.
4. Fairy Houses
This is another great time to get the little ones involved. At the base of a big tree, create fairy houses by stacking small stones, moss, and twigs to shape the house – including windows, doors, little benches, etc. You can also add little stone animals or fairies from craft stores too.
5. Wall Décor
Create a piece of wall art with beautiful beach pebbles and some wire. Firstly create a shape or design with your wire – a heart is always a winner. Then make a mesh casing around the wire shape and, before you close the case, fill it with pebbles. Hang it on your garden wall or in your outdoor entertainment area.
Bigger Project Ideas
1. Water Feature
This will take a bit more precision and some googling. Water features or basic fountains consist of three things – water which flows up a pipe and trickles back down continually, a pump which propels the water, and a piece of sculpture built from any material you want. We’ll let you look into the mechanics, but we suggest stacking big, flat rocks one on top of another to create your rustic water feature.
Sectioning off your garden is a perfect way to bring simple decoration to your garden. Not only does it help to create different spaces within a big garden, but it can help with separating different types of plants or the different levels of your garden. There are many ways to handle this, but we suggest layering bigger rocks and stones inside the wire mesh to form a narrow and short sectioning wall. The rocks and stones can be separated by little wooden poles at evenly-spaced stages or left as one long ‘wall’ of rocks – it all depends on the look you’re going for.
3. Outdoor Furniture
Just as with sectioning, you can create benches or tables from bigger rocks collected and stacked within a hardy wire base, or even just cemented in place. Place a rustic piece of wood on top of your wire bench or table base, or even just some cushions for your bench, and voila!
Why not create a tiny pond? Water features are always beautiful and allow you to add different plant life to your garden too. Why not try to DIY a cement pond rock yourself? The pond can be formed in sand bed molds. Once you’ve outlined the size of the pond, excavate the land and lay a cushioning material at the bottom. Fill with water, hide the liner and add your choice of plants or accessories.
